IFTTT - Internet Automation

Social Media Automation

Now it’s time to unveil my hidden social media automation tool! ;) I don’t know why I haven’t done an IFTTT post yet. Maybe because I was waiting to discover that one hidden strategy that I could break to the world. Maybe I was keeping trade secrets a “secret”. Either way, for the world, here it is!

IFTTT syncs to various products and platforms via API. Once IFTTT has connected to all of the networks, it’s possible to automatically post content whenever a trigger occurs.

IFTTT uses “if/then” statements to post content. Example shown below:

IFTTT WordPress To Facebook

In the above example, anytime there’s a new post to Durango Marketer, it’ll automatically post a link to Facebook. Originally I just had a link post trigger with every new post. With the Facebook hashtag release, there’s now a reason for me to segment my posts by category, meaning that this specific trigger will soon be segmented and hashtags will be added accordingly.

Available Channels

The current available blogging / social media channels are as follows:

  • Blogger
  • Facebook
  • Flickr
  • Foursquare
  • Instagram
  • Linkedin
  • Soundcloud
  • Tumblr
  • Twitter
  • Vimeo
  • WordPress (.com and .org)
  • YouTube

There are more channels, such as GMail, Dropbox, Bitly and Craigslist, just to name a few, but I only want to focus on the social media and web 2.0 for this post.

Automating Social Media

IFTTT won’t automatically curate content on your behalf, but it is great for syndicating and broadcasting content. For the majority of the social media automation, I use RSS feeds as “triggers”. This means the various social media handles will syndicate anything new that’s added to the feed.

WordPress generates an RSS right out of the box. Each category is also capable of generating it’s own RSS feed. Conveniently enough, I do the majority of my web work in WordPress, making IFTTT a very useful product within my arsenal.

And that’s really it. The platform is incredibly simple. If you want to see IFTTT in action, simply check out my Facebook account. All the Durango Marketer posts are via IFTTT. I use a WordPress plugin for my auto-tweets, as the plugin will pull post tags and use them as Twitter hashtags. Something I find incredibly useful.

I’ll update this post with a video screen capture walking through the IFTTT the next time I’m filming up in Yellow Jacket. I will also follow-up with post with some useful WordPress plugins that can accomplish similar tasks.
